Background

American is a nation of immigrants. Why did so many people come to America? How did they come here? Where did they come from? Why are people still coming?

The Statue of Liberty is a very famous monument in America. There is an inscription on the statue that reads:

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door.

This statement means different things to different people, but many people look at it in terms of what it says about immigration. What do you think it means?
